CHINES HISTORY
Chines is a hidden precious
village in the Valley of Guadalest.
Chines belongs to Guadalest which has Arab origin. Before century XVIII, there
is very little information on Chines because the archives of the Orduña
House in Guadalest were burned in a fire.
The Orduña family was
"vassals" of the Marquis of Ariza and Guadalest, and watched fields
given to the farmers for agriculture. The Orduños had a very important
role in Chines, they were managers of many properties there because the climate
was more favourable for agriculture: cereals, carob tree, vine. The almonds
tree, orange tree and olive tree are very recent, of less than 100 years ago.
The Orduños were fighting on the inheritance of Chines.
Don Juan Orduña (1684-1750) died in Chines in a struggle about the
limits of his fields (+ - 1750).
The Chapel of Chines was property
of the Orduños, of Don Antonio de Orduña (presbyter), but it
is known little on his history. Perhaps it has been small mosque during the
Arab occupation.
Until 1792, it was under protection of San Francisco de Asises and San Antonio
de Padua. Now it is under protection of Santa Ana and San Joaquin, parents
of Maria.
We know very little about Chines,
mainly it was a rural world that depended on the Guadalest valley and not
on Callosa d´En Sarriá.
In the last century, from the
creation of the school with her only teacher (1933) a lot of people lived
in Chines. Less than 30 years ago, the school was closed and the population
left the village little by little.
